The anti-authoritarian approach to art and the culture of aesthetics was one of Danish artist Asger Jorn’s trademarks. Another distinct position was his focus on the cultural mechanisms and hierarchies of values which emerged in the paradigmatic center-periphery ideology in Europe.
With a starting point in the exhibition “Anti-Asger”, this lecture presents a selection of Jorn’s written works, published as well as unpublished, based on the concepts vandalism, periphery and opposition. It will be discussed how, and to which extent, these strategies were activated by Jorn – and whether they still hold generative potentials today.

Teresa Østergaard Pedersen (b. 1981) is MA in Art History and Medieval Archaeology. She worked as curator at Museum Jorn, Silkeborg, from 2009-2014 and from 2014 she became a PhD Fellow at Institute for Aesthetics and Communication, Art History, at Aarhus University with a project on Asger Jorn’s Scandinavian Institute for Comparative Vandalism and how it can be used to address alternative narratives for Iron Age and Viking Age art in Scandinavia.
